A Snapshot

Every now and again, I like to take a verbal "snapshot" of the kids.

I like to interview them and write down their thoughts,
so that at a later point in time I can see what changed
and what stayed the same.
It is also fun for them to see what their interests were
at a certain age.

This was the interview I did as they were starting their new school year:

Kate, age 13:

Favorite TV show: Project Runway or Queen Bees
Book: Twice Upon a Marigold
Song: Anything from Wicked or Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat
Color: Blue
Girl's name: Calypso
Boy's name: Obelix
When I grow up, I want to be a: Teacher
In 5 years, I see myself: going to college
In 10 years, I see myself: working as a teacher
Best Memory of the summer: Um....there's a lot!
Three Goals for the Year:
1- Get a Straight A Certificate
2- Invite more new kids to sit with us at our lunch table
3- find extracurricular activities

Chris, age 9:

Favorite:
tv show: Spongebob Squarepants
book: Pendragon series
song: Bet On It (High School Musical)
color: Orange
Girl's name: Sabrina
Boy's name: Bobby
When I grow up, I want to be a: Lawyer
In five years, I will be:...I don't know
In ten years, I will be: Having fun driving
Best memory of the summer: North Carolina, definitely!
Three goals for the year:
1) getting an A in math
2) get better in cursive
3) hitting a triple in baseball

Trey, age 6

Favorite:
TV show: Dino Squad
Book: Parts
Song: Bet On It
Color: Red
Girl's name: ??
Boy's name: Triton
When I grow up, I want to be: A veterinarian
In five years, I will be: ...kind of like Chris, I don't really know.
In ten years, I will be: I'll be just old enough to drive, right? So I'll be showing off my driver's license.
Best memory of the summer: My playdate with Sam
Three goals for the year:
1) To get straight I's (independents)
2) To not get any W's (with assistance)
3) to finish learning bike riding by Monday.
------------

Interestingly, some of those goals have already been met. Kate had three of the new kids join at her lunch table.  She has taken on a couple of extracurricular activities, like a Shakespeare seminar that she and her friend are spearheading.

Chris did hit that triple in baseball! The other two...not yet.

Trey did get all I's on his progress report AND is riding his two wheeler very well..although I don't think he made it by Monday!

What a great idea. I'll have to remember this. I love the goals. I like how Trey said he wanted to finish bike riding by Monday. My kids have a limited concept of time.

How cool is this?!?! As your kids get older, these little mini interviews will be a great snapshot into what they were like when they were "little". Doing this also shows your kids how much of an engaged parent you are which I'll bet also makes them feel more secure. :)

I love this idea...hope you don't mind if I "steal" it!
Their favorite names also cracked me up.
Fun!

Obelix and Triton? I can honestly say that I've never heard of those names.

You have a great idea Leeann...I bet it's really interesting to see how their thoughts change over the years.

I'm sorry I haven't gotten back to you about a couple of comments you left on my blog. I haven't commented much at all in the past couple of weeks. I just don't seem to have quite enough hours in my day!

Anyway, you asked about how to make your son's name in the possessive form. I was taught that it would be Chris' toys, NOT Chris's toys, but I checked http://www.english-zone.com/spelling/possessives.html and they show that either way is now acceptable. Funny how that stuff changes over the years.

Also, we do not live in a really remote area. My husband's brother and sister in law live around the corner from us, which actually puts their house sort of behind ours and over to the side a little. Our lot is a little over an acre, so it seems like we have a lot of yard. His sister and brother in law, who are building next to us, have a lot that is a little under an acre, and on the other side of them we have an additional 2/3 acre lot in case one of our boys want to build later on. They've both said that they do not want to, but they're only 17 and 21 and may change their minds.

We've never had five deer at one time around our house...that must have been an amazing sight! As far as a groundhog scaling a tree...oh my! That was definitely one frightened groundhog!

What a fun thing to have the kids do! I'm totally stealing this idea!
