Halloween 2.0-- the Pumpkins!

While I like Halloween,
I am not a big fan of pumpkin carving,
so that has always been Rob's domain.

The night before Halloween
as we were getting into bed,
Rob and I were discussing the day
as we always do.

Looking both proud and teary,
he informed me that for the first year EVER,
in thirteen years,
not one of the kids needed help doing their pumpkins.

They scooped out the innards,

Kate's pumpkin

designed their pumpkins on paper
and carved the design into their individual pumpkins

Chris's pumpkin

all by themselves.

Even Trey.

Trey's pumpkin

And we smiled at each other...
and cried.

See how proud??

And so it is with parenting.

You hold their hands
and teach them
and catch them as they stumble through their attempts at something new.

But inevitably, as they spread their wings and fly,
the moment is both joyous and bittersweet
with the knowledge that if you do your job well,
one day they will fly from that nest for good.

I need to leave this post on a happy note,
so with that,

BOO!!!!

Wow - I'm impressed. Cleaning out pumpkins is the hardest part.

So true - it is joyous and bittersweet when they no longer "need" you. I hope I do them right.
